The perfume of Genoa: how the city’s olfactory signature is built

A pyramid that starts with herbs

Every fragrance reads like an olfactory pyramid: the most volatile notes appear first, then give way to the heart and finally the base, the part that lingers longest. The scent of Genoa opens on a green, sparkling top — basil, mint, eucalyptus — quickly softened by orange and bergamot. That is the first impression: fresh, aromatic, recognisable.

The heart: the Mediterranean scrub

As the top fades, the heart emerges, and this is where the perfume of Genoa shows its identity. Rosemary, lavender, coriander, pine and clove form an accord that smells of hillside rather than beach: the herbs that grow on Ligurian slopes, the resin of pines, a spicy edge that adds depth. It is the part that holds the fragrance together and gives it its aromatic tone.

The base: what remains

On the dry-down, thyme, marjoram, sage and jasmine remain. The aromatic herbs close the circle opened at the top, while jasmine adds a floral touch that tempers the sharpness and keeps the scent on surfaces and fabrics for longer. It is a restrained base, not sweet, in keeping with the idea of a signature fragrance made for a space rather than for skin.

Why herbs, and not the sea

It is no accident that basil leads: in Genoa it is almost a civic symbol — the soul of pesto — and few ingredients say “Genoa” as immediately. Choosing the aromatic over the easy marine or citrus route is the most interesting thing about the perfume of Genoa. The sea is the city’s most obvious image; the herbs, pines and scrub of the hinterland are what describe it without shortcuts. It is an identity decision, and it takes long work selecting raw materials and testing in real conditions — the same process behind every one of our creations. The finest materials come from Grasse; everything else is composed and assembled in Italy.

A fragrance made for space

There is a substantial difference between a skin perfume and an ambient fragrance, and the perfume of Genoa belongs to the second kind. It has to diffuse through a volume of air, hold in rooms of different temperatures, stay pleasant for hours without tiring the nose. That is why the balance between the notes is calibrated differently from an eau de cologne: the aromatic green top gives the initial push, the heart provides continuity, the base keeps the fragrance anchored to the space. It is the same principle that governs a good home diffuser, taken to the scale of a street.

How to recognise it

Next time you meet the fragrance — in a diffuser, a spray, or along the route in the city — try reading it over time. In the first seconds the green, citrus top dominates; after a few minutes the herbs of the heart emerge; hours later, on fabric, the warm, dry base remains. It is a small exercise that changes how you experience a scent: instead of “I like it” or “I don’t,” you start to make out what it is made of. The scent of Genoa, with its clear character, is a good place to start.

From the urban route to the home diffuser

The perfume of Genoa began as the signature of an urban project — the fragrance diffused through the caruggi during Genova Profumata — but it also lives all year in a domestic version. The Genova reed diffuser brings the same accord indoors, at an intensity meant for a room rather than a street. Anyone drawn to this aromatic character will find a kindred, wilder profile in Herbes Sauvages.

Which is exactly what we ask of an olfactory signature: to let us recognise a place before we even see it.
